Attacks on abortion access continue. On Wednesday, the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled to roll back expansions of mifepristone by mail. From CNN: "[The] ruling, if allowed to take effect, would put on hold 2016 FDA regulatory changes that, among other things, allowed women to take the drug later into their pregnancies and allowed non-physicians to prescribe the drug. The ruling would also reverse, while the litigation in the case continued, the FDA’s more recent moves to allow the pills to be dispensed via the mail."
This case essentially kicks the can down the road until the Supreme Court decides on the FDA's approval of the drug, the most commonly prescribed medication for abortion in the United States. It's important to note that this case was brought forward by a religious organization that cites "safety concerns" over mifepristone.
From CHAT: "Medication abortion pills have been restricted by the FDA for decades, yet research shows time and again that abortion pills are safer than Viagra, penicillin, and acetaminophen (or Tylenol). For instance, research emphasizes that medication abortion is extremely safe and highly effective, with a success rate of over 95%. The utilization of telehealth, self-administration, and provision of medication abortion by non-physician clinicians have also been shown to be both safe and effective."
John, regardless of the science, religious extremists will seek to use right-wing controlled courts to restrict access to abortion and ultimately take this decision away from Americans. Help us fight for our rights!
