Last weekend, Governor Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin
co-hosted a reception with the Virginia Equine Alliance commemorating the 50th
anniversary of Secretariat's historic, Triple-Crown-winning season. On the eve
of Colonial Downs' Festival of Racing, the "Secretariat Comes Home" reception
welcomed more than 150 guests from around the globe and featured the Virginia
thoroughbred superstar in the form of a bronze statue called "Racing into
History" sculpted by renowned artist Jocelyn Russell. Thanks to many generous
supporters, this statue will find a permanent home at Randolph-Macon College.
Mansion guests included Secretariat’s owner/breeder's daughter, Kate Chenery
Tweedy, and other racing royalty who sipped on a specially curated cocktail,
the' Virginia Thoroughbred', and were treated to music featured in the
Disney-produced movie, Secretariat, performed by Mr. Bubba Johnson, the Music
Director at Second Mount Zion Baptist Church, and his talented group of
community singers.

Saturday’s races at Colonial Downs brought out Virginia’s finest! The New
Kent venue hosted guests from around the globe as well as representatives of
Virginia's exceptional equine industry, including breeders, trainers, and
owners. Drawing especially raucous cheers, and on the 50th anniversary of the
Triple Crown win by Secretariat, Virginia-bred Gigante claimed victory in the
first running of the 49-year-old Secretariat Stakes at Colonial Downs. The
First Lady and Governor Youngkin enjoyed celebrating and toasting these
remarkable athletes and the equine industry’s female superstars like Deputy
Secretary of Agriculture Beth Green, head of the Virginia Equine Alliance,
Debbie Easter, Kate Chenery Tweedy, Miss Virginia, Katie Rose, and all those on
hand for the spectacle.

While reveling in the historic victory of Virginia's own Secretariat as well
as the Commonwealth's remarkable breadth of equine interests, we highlight
Virginia native Maria Reardon. Reardon utilizes the ‘plein air’ tradition and
continues to make #homehistory by teaching painting classes at the Virginia
Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and the Tuckahoe Women’s Club. Learn more about
Reardon in this week’s “Sisterhood Spotlight” on the First Lady’s website, and
