In honor of Black History Month, join us for the AYD Black Leadership Forum on February 25th at 7pm at NRECA in Ballston!
This meeting will feature a forum on black leadership with the following local community leaders:
- Kent Carter, Arlington Branch NAACP
- Aderson Francois, Georgetown Law
- Jasmine Jones, Rock the Vote
- Julius Spain, Arlington Branch NAACP
- Cicely Whitfield, Bonder & Amanda Johnson Community Development Corporation
- Sean Perryman, Fairfax County Branch NAACP
This meeting will take place at NRECA (4301 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA) which is just a short walk from the Ballston metro station.
We hope to see you there! Have questions? Email our president, Dan Matthews, at [email protected]
Join AYD and Arlington Dems in lending Phoenix Bikes a hand!
Phoenix Bikes is a small business in South Arlington with strong ties to their community. Their programs teach teens a trade and provide them with transportation, which is nothing short of inspirational. Participating teens not only learn to refurbish and rebuild a bike to give to someone else, but also receive one of their own in return.
On Saturday, March 7th from 10am - 1pm, AYD and Arlington Dems will volunteer with Phoenix Bikes. We’ll first meet at Phoenix Bikes (909 S. Dinwiddie St, Arlington, VA) and start with a quick orientation and rundown of activities. Afterwards, we will head over to Clarendon/Lyon Village to canvass for bike donations. Around 1pm we will finish up and head out for some lunch!

The Arlington Democrats and the Arlington Young Democrats are co-hosting a Challenging Racism: Getting Started session on Saturday, February 29th from 11am-1:30pm at the Arlington Mill Community Center Room 404 (909 S Dinwiddie St, Arlington).
Registration is required to attend this event.
To register for the Challenging Racism: Getting Started session, sign up here: http://bit.ly/challengingracism2020
If registration is full, please add your name and email to the waitlist, and you will be contacted at the email address you provide if space is available.
Getting Started is a 2½ hour session led by trained facilitators to introduce participants to racial literacy, individual vs. systemic racism, impacts of redlining to understand segregation, and white wealth. The main topic of this session is the history of racism in housing. Using local Arlington maps and stories, attendees learn how the Federal Housing Administration's mid-20th century use of redlining to prevent loans to Black people affected a community by locking in segregated housing and influencing housing patterns. Attendees have opportunities for questions, discussion, and reflection. Resources for follow-up reading and discussion are provided.
Please contact [email protected] with any questions!
Join us for AYD's Women's Leadership Forum during our March meeting on March 24th at 7pm at the Arlington Mill Community Center!
This meeting will feature a forum on women’s leadership with the following speakers:
- Congresswoman Elaine Luria
- Adele McClure, Director of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, Board Member of Forbes 30 Under 30, and former AYD
- Tanya Bradsher, Chief of Staff for Congressman Don Beyer
- And more to be announced!
