Dear Neighbor,

My team and I are hard at work in and around the district. This newsletter highlights some of my meetings and work. If you want to invite me to an event or schedule a meeting with me, please reach out to my office at 310-831-1799.  In the meantime, enjoy this week's newsletter.

Successful Senior Health Fair

Last week, we held our largest ever Annual Senior Health Fair and Luncheon, with over 1,200 older Americans in attendance at the Carson Community Center!  I want to thank everyone who came out for a fun and informative event with free health screenings, a hot meal, games, mariachis, and my legislative update on our work for you.

For the first time ever, we had a special guest, Congressman Adam Schiff. Congressman Schiff gave an update on our work to protect and expand social security and Medicare. He also talked about how Democrats in Congress and President Biden continue our work to lower costs and improve access to affordable healthcare services for older Americans across the country.

In-Home Caregiving Services

One of the presentations at our health fair was from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services. A representative discussed how to obtain caregiver assistance for a loved one. See below for links to some of the resources she shared:

Nursing Home Resources

A Medicare representative shared information on how to identify a quality nursing home. See the links below for some of these resources:

How to Avoid Scams

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was also on hand and gave attendees some tips on how to spot scams and report them.  The FBI estimates that older Americans lose $3 billion to scams each year. Knowing how to spot a scam can save you and your loved ones money and time, and keep your information safe. You can Sign Up for Consumer Alerts from the Federal Trade Commission  to get emails with details about the latest scams targeted at older Americans.  You can also find information about how to deal with a potential scam, and how to report a scam to the FTC.

National Health Center Week

Last week was National Health Center Week. Community Health Centers are a reason to celebrate, so I visited two in our district: AltaMed in Paramount and the TCC Family Health Center at Hamilton Middle School in Long Beach.

These health centers ensure that quality healthcare is accessible for everyone, especially low-income and communities of color that face increased barriers to access healthcare services.

Visit to Atlantic Memorial Healthcare Center

This week we continued our advocacy and visits with healthcare centers and providers. I stopped by Atlantic Memorial Healthcare Center, a skilled nursing facility in Long Beach, to see firsthand the critical services they offer to patients, like occupational therapy, speech therapy and more.

We also discussed the urgent need to address staffing shortages and deliver quality training to ensure patients of these facilities receive the highest quality care.

Earlier this year, I introduced the Support Faculty and Expand Access to Nursing School Act to help address these issues by building capacity at nursing schools to train more nurses to enter the workforce.

Visit to Eisner Health to Discuss 340B

Eisner Health provides healthcare services to Californians. I have partnered with them to expand access to dental services, dermatology services, and more. This week I stopped by to meet with executives from Eisner Health in Lynwood to discuss the 340B drug program.

340B is a a federal program that requires pharmaceutical companies to offer health centers like Eisner Health lower prescription drug prices that are passed on to low-income and uninsured patients. We spoke about the need to protect this program and make sure it's in place long-term.

I will always fight to lower costs for our most vulnerable communities in Congress.

Meeting with the American Institute of Architects

It was great to meet with the American Institute of Architects of Long Beach and the South Bay Area to discuss the housing crisis and ways we can collaborate on federal policy that is sustainable and healthy for our communities.

As Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Homelessness, I will continue to fight for federal resources and funding to advance affordable and accessible housing.

We also discussed the devastating impacts of the Supreme Court decision on President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. This ruling disproportionately impacts low-income students and makes it more difficult for them to purse dreams of becoming architects and other important careers connected to the development of affordable housing. A high-quality education must be accessible without significant financial burdens, so that students can better provide for themselves and their families and contribute to our vibrant workforce.
