The American founding remains history’s biggest leap forward for human freedom.


For the first time, a nation proclaimed that all people are created equal, that we all have unalienable rights, and that government is legitimate only when it derives from the consent of the governed.


They founded our nation on the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

But it’s up to us to defend these principles, John.

Defend Our Founding Principles

The radical Left would like you to think our founding principles are tools of oppression. That’s false. Those very principles have lifted most of humanity from poverty to prosperity and from tyranny to democracy.


And of course, the Left says we’re no better than any other country. In fact, they say America is worse.


Are we perfect? No. But the principles at the heart of America are perfect.


Every day at the UN, I faced people who said our country is evil. Proving them wrong was the best part of my job!

I knew I’d have to deal with countries that hate America. But I never expected to see that same hatred coming from our own people.


Anger toward America is no longer just the party line in the college classroom. It’s now the gospel in the K-12 classroom – the corporate boardroom – the media green room – and the backrooms of government.



People who hate America may say living in the land of the free is a curse – not a blessing. But that’s completely false.


I was reminded of that fact every day at the UN.


I didn’t go to the pretty places as UN Ambassador. I went to places you will hopefully never go and saw things no one should ever see.


There was one day in particular that stands out. I stood on the Simon Bolivar bridge between Colombia and Venezuela, watching thousands of Venezuelans pour by, fleeing from socialist tyranny. Most had walked many miles in the blazing sun to get the only meal they would eat that day. They were coming from a place where they killed zoo animals for food.

Entire families passed me, carrying what few possessions they had. For some, it was a stuffed animal. For others, a plastic bag with a couple pieces of clothing inside.


When I left the bridge, I went to a nearby shelter run by the Catholic Church, where the Venezuelans were gathering. I met a few of them and hugged them. After a few minutes, more and more families started to gather around. I didn’t understand why they flocked to someone they’d never met.

And then it hit me. They didn’t care who I was. They cared where I was from. In me, they saw America, and in America, they saw hope.


This is what I have come to know:

Even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in America!


That’s why we must come back to our national purpose – to realize that the values that made this country great are still the values we need to hold on to.

And we must fight to protect and defend those values each and every day.

The Founders’ revolutionary vision ignited the American Dream. And it paved the path for generations of people, including my parents, to come to this country legally in search of a better life… one of freedom, prosperity, and opportunity for all.


You and I know America is better than the divisions, distractions, and detractions we experience today.



We still see America as the land of freedom and opportunity, that lifts up everyone, not just a select few.


But we must fight for our country and the principles she was founded on every day. The moral mandate to make America freer, fairer, and better falls to us.
