Peak weekday routes 16, 232, 237, 301, 304 and 320 remain suspended through Sept 1

King County Metro will continue to *suspend peak weekday routes 16, 232, 237, 301, 304 and 320 through Sept. 1* due to ongoing staff and bus availability. Some individual weekday bus trips also are canceled. Riders have alternatives available during these suspensions (listed on Metro Matters [ [link removed] ]) and we will provide regular updates to keep you informed about your transit service and options. s.

King County Metro will update its transit schedules September 2 to improve trip reliability for riders.

To better match transit service with bus and workforce availability, King County Metro has planned temporary service reductions. *Metro will suspend 20 peak-only commuter routes and reduce service on 12 routes beginning September 2. Alternatives are available for nearly all affected routes.* Most riders will see no changes as 124 of 156 routes and 92% of boardings are not affected.

These 20 routes will be fully suspended. Each of these routes have alternatives, most available at the same bus stops or stops nearby. *For a detailed list of rider alternatives, visit our Service Change page [ [link removed] ].*

These 12 routes will be reduced to operate less frequently. Some high-ridership routes such as Routes 7 and 36 will continue to have very frequent service, with wait times of just a few more minutes. Lower-ridership routes will shift service to every 30 to 60 minutes during some time periods. *For a detailed list of rider alternatives, visit our Service Change page [ [link removed] ].*

Metro sought to protect several categories of service, including routes with high ridership demand and few alternate transit options. By adjusting schedules and suspending routes, the upcoming service change will deliver roughly the same number of transit trips currently operating on the road, without the day-to-day variability that has inconvenienced riders during the past several months.

King County Metro’s largest union approves 3-year labor contract

King County Metro and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 587 have finalized a three-year labor contract that increases wages by approximately 17 percent over the life of the contract. The agreement also includes a lump sum retroactive payment, a retention bonus of $2,500, and a one-time $2,500 ratification signing bonus. The contract shortens the pay step progression and vacation accrual time for part-time transit operators, aligning it with the current policies for full-time employees.

Negotiations on the contract started in May 2022, with the parties reaching a tentative agreement this June. The ATU members ratified the contract on Aug. 15.

The adopted contract also provides incentives for new employees, with a $3,000 recruitment incentive for new hires in key positions, including transit operators, vehicle maintenance and rail mechanics, and Transit Customer Information Specialists. It includes incentives to trainee programs for key trades positions to encourage more people to begin training.

*Beat the Heat*

Puget Sound summers can see temperatures soar into the 80s (and beyond) over the weekend. When the heat arrives, King County Metro can help connect you to community cooling centers, and Public Health – Seattle & King County has tips for protecting yourself as you travel.

*Stay out of the heat if you can*

Metro *does not* waive fares during heat events, and those who board are expected to pay. Our operators will never make fares a barrier to people in safety situations, such as a ride to a cooling center.

All Metro buses have air conditioning (AC). If you are riding, the best way to help keep the buses cool is to keep the windows on the buses closed to increase the efficiency of the AC. While we have air conditioning, sometimes that isn’t enough during the hottest parts of the day. If you have the choice, we encourage you to travel during cooler parts of the day if you can and skip unnecessary trips.

*Before you go*
Extreme heat can impact roads and bridges and create potential delays. Using Metro Transit Alerts [ [link removed] ], you can find out about potential delays by email or text message. Even if you haven’t signed up for alerts, you can also find the latest alerts for each route on the RSS feeds webpage [ [link removed] ]

*Real-time (while waiting for transit)*

* Our real-time updates can let you know when a bus trip is operating, when it is due to depart, or if it was canceled:
* Next Departures information is available at TripPlanner [ [link removed] ]. Trip planner is also a great tool to plan your trip to cooling centers in your community.
* Text for Departures  [ [link removed] ] is available by texting your bus stop number to 62550, and the next bus trips will be displayed with an “s” for scheduled or “canceled.”
