MEDIA ADVISORY AND PRESS RELEASE
Congressman Al Green to Host Historic 2nd Annual Slavery Remembrance Legislative Update with Prominent Clergy, Public Officials, Civic Organizations and General Public
(Houston, TX) — On Saturday, August 19, 2023, Congressman Al Green will host the historic 2nd Annual Slavery Remembrance Legislative Update and free Commemorative Breakfast. This important occasion will feature an esteemed lineup of special guests, including prominent clergy, public officials, and civic organizations from across the Greater Houston Area. The event is scheduled to take place at the Wyndham Hotel near NRG Park located at 8686 Kirby Drive Houston, TX 77054 starting at 8:30 a.m. CST.
Congressman Al Green will provide a legislative update and share the latest developments regarding the designation of August 20th as Slavery Remembrance Day. Reverend Max A. Miller, Jr., Pastor Suzette Caldwell, and Bishop James Dixon will address the importance of slavery remembrance. This initiative is a cornerstone of Congressman Al Green’s Conscience Agenda which includes the establishment of a National Day of Commemoration for the lives sacrificed over nearly 250 years to make America great. This day will serve as an ever-enduring reminder of the evils of slavery and its sinister prodigies to prevent history from repeating itself.
The event will spotlight key legislative initiatives, including the legislation creating Slavery Remembrance Day. During the program, special tribute will be accorded State Representative Al Edwards, renowned as the father of Juneteenth. There will also be an homage paid to the historical Houston Black Press. Congressman Green will highlight efforts to secure Congressional Gold Medals for the enslaved, recognizing their immense contributions as the foundational mothers and fathers of America’s economic greatness, similar to what Congress did for Confederate soldiers in 1956. Attendees will have the pleasure of experiencing the captivating sounds of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild and participate in a special ceremony memorializing the lives of those who endured the horrors of slavery to make America great.
“As we assemble to announce the 2nd Annual Slavery Remembrance Legislative Update, we stand unified in our commitment to memorialize and honor the legacy of those who endured the injustices of slavery, one of the great crimes against humanity,” Congressman Al Green stated.
