Schools afraid of gun violence are requiring clear backpacks.

School shootings have become the norm in the United States. My children are part of the Lockdown Generation – a generation that our leaders have created with their empty thoughts and prayers.

As a gun violence survivor and a mom, it’s not just disappointing, it’s unacceptable that lawmakers keep failing our children like this.

Some schools have tried to take matters into their own hands, either banning backpacks or requiring students to use clear ones, but it will do little to actually address gun violence and end school shootings; these policies will only placate parental fears while lawmakers would rather take blood money from the gun lobby than take action to protect our children.

Enough is enough. Our children deserve to feel safe in school. We don’t need clear backpacks – we need to pass gun safety legislation now. Will you join me in calling on Congress to take action to prevent school shootings? Add your name to our urgent petition right now:

After the massacre in Uvalde last year, several Texas school districts required their students to carry clear backpacks. But this policy would have done nothing to stop the Uvalde shooter: He wasn’t a student and, moreover, the AR-15 he used to gun down 19 children would not have fit into a backpack. But banning that weapon of war could stop the next tragedy – something that Congress has the power to do right now.

There were 46 school shootings in 2022 and already 26 this year – with a new school year about to start, we owe it to our children to pass common sense gun violence prevention legislation – like an assault weapons ban – that will actually help to keep them safe in schools.

John, I’m sick and tired of sending my kids to school, scared they might not come home. I’m sick of the constant lockdown drills, the constant fear. It’s not the reality that we have to live in – but we must work together to push our lawmakers toward action.
