Thanks to the new cohort of leaders that people like us have helped send to Congress in recent elections, Congress is experiencing a transformation in racial representation. Not only has there been an increase in the number of majority-minority districts over the last half-century, but the number of people of color representing majority-minority and majority-white districts has also increased.

This progress—despite the fact that we’re not quite close to “settling the bigger questions surrounding race, racial representation, and the electoral power afforded to minority voters”—fuels our movement in creating an evolving, inclusive, and representative democracy.

NPR, through a FOIA lawsuit, obtained more than 1,600 pages of inspection reports examining over two dozen ICE facilities in 16 states from 2017 to 2019, and the findings are damning. These previously concealed reports highlight issues such as “negligent” medical care, “unsafe and filthy” conditions, racist abuse, and unprovoked use of force. While it was crystal clear already, NPR’s investigation makes it abundantly clear that our immigration system and treatment of immigrants must change.

Every year, a tree adds another ring, telling the tale of its growth, challenges, and resilience. Similarly, each one of our Ready to Win trainings adds another ring to our journey as an organization—a testament to the progress, power, and community we’re building at New American Leaders. And each one of our Ready to Win participants embodies a ring, representing their unique story and the strength they possess. Together, these rings create a rock-solid foundation, ensuring that our tree—our movement—stands tall and proud for years to come.

As we reflect on our 2023 Ready to Win training, which we just held in Washington, D.C. on August 11-14, we are filled with immense gratitude and hope for our democracy. Joining us in the nation’s capital for our two-track training for New Americans who want to run for office or lead a campaign within the next two years were 34 dynamic leaders from 11 states and Washington, D.C. Over the course of four days, they learned everything from how to run an inclusive campaign to how to deal with racism and hate on the campaign trail to how to share their story and give a stump speech—tools that prepared them to not just run for office but to win.

Just as each tree ring captures a year’s triumphs and trials, this year’s Ready to Win training encapsulated our shared vision, tenacity, and the promise of New American leadership, ready to weather any storm and flourish for generations.

Here are some pretty awesome things our alums have done recently:

  • Jeff Preptit (2022 Ready to Lead Colorado and Ready to Win) won his election on August 3 to represent District 25 on the Nashville Metro Council in Tennessee.
  • Arizona just celebrated the end of its legislative session, and our alums, including State Senator Anna Hernandez (2021 Ready to Lead Online National Women’s Training and Ready to Win) and State Representatives Lorena Austin (2022 Ready to Lead Colorado) and Analise Ortiz (2021 Ready to Lead Southwest and Ready to Win), had a number of impressive legislative wins.
  • New York City Councilmember Alexa Avilés (2019 Ready to Lead New York and Ready to Win) called for a national strategy to solve the immigration crisis.
  • Arizona State Senator Priya Sundareshan (2021 Ready to Lead Online National Women’s Training) received the Rising Star award from the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators; she sponsored more than 15 environmental bills in her first session, addressing transportation, electrification, greenhouse gas reduction, groundwater management, and more.
Help fight systemic white supremacy by supporting our mission to get more women, immigrants, and underrepresented Americans on the ballot and into power.
