John, 103 years ago today the 19th Amendment was ratified, and our great American democracy was changed forever. For the first time, women had the right to vote.
But we cannot talk about the progress the 19th Amendment made without acknowledging the people it left behind. The 19th Amendment only granted white women the right to vote, and women who look like me wouldn’t be granted our rights until almost 40 years later, during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.
The fight over our voting rights still goes on today. Just last week, Ohioans came together to defeat a Republican-backed power grab that aimed to diminish the power of our vote.
And therein lies the truth of America, John – our democracy is a work in progress. The American values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are worth fighting for – but we must fight together to achieve them.
I’m proud to have you on my team for the fight ahead. Thank you for your support.
