As you’re reading this message, authoritarian groups like Moms for Liberty and their allied politicians are purging books, harassing educators, and mobilizing resentment against the full inclusion of Black, indigenous, people of color, and LGBTQ communities in our schools.
In Temecula, California, a Far Right local school board has abused their authority by banning history textbooks and firing a school superintendent. In Martin County, Florida, over 97 books were pulled from school shelves following complaints from conservative activists. And in Noblesville, Indiana, a public library stripped over 18,000 books from its selection for teenagers.
When the Far Right and their allied politicians amass and abuse power to stoke fears and incite resentment, it’s children who suffer the consequences. For future generations, nothing less than the freedom to learn is at stake.
As we speak, People For the American Way is leading the resistance against pro-censorship groups like Moms For Liberty – but we need your support today to keep up the fight in communities across the country. But with continued support from members like you, our actions ARE having a REAL impact. On June 30, People For led a protest in Philadelphia against a hateful event organized by Moms for Liberty. It was an incredible day:
I witnessed grandparents, local activists, elected officials, and supporters like you, come together to defend our freedom to learn. Our movement’s bravery, commitment, and investment in protecting the next generation was unquestionable. We made our message heard loud and clear: we will never accept censorship, homophobia, authoritarianism, or bigotry.
Our protest made headlines. Mobilizations like this help us beat pro-censorship extremists at their own game by denying them the attention they crave. But our movement is only as strong as our members and the support you’re able to provide.
