Dear Friend,
Global population soared past 8 billion last year ! As a loyal Population Connection supporter, you likely know that we added a billion people to our world in just a dozen years … a rapid acceleration that’s harming both people and our precious planet.
We must stabilize global population NOW. Runaway population growth heats our planet … and the threats of climate change include flooding, sea level rise, more extreme heat, drought, and biodiversity loss. We truly don’t have a moment to lose.
Just consider this summer—estimated by climate scientists to be among the hottest, if not the hottest, in the history of our planet.
In July, the heat index surpassed 150 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the Middle East, nearing or surpassing the maximum temperatures the human body can withstand. Temperatures reached alarming and dangerous heights in parts of the United States and Europe as well.
Earlier this year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a report warning that the world is on the “brink of catastrophic warming.” And while none of us will escape catastrophic levels of warming, those living in the most vulnerable parts of the world will bear the brunt of climate impacts.
The report also cited Cyclone Freddy, which pummeled Madagascar and southern Africa for over a month early this year. It broke records as the longest-lived and most energetic cyclone ever recorded, killing hundreds and displacing thousands.
It’s simply devastating to imagine events like this becoming more commonplace.
Ther e are no quick fixes … but here at Population Connection, we will tirelessly proclaim the most effective solution to so many of the challenges facing our planet: global population stabilization.
You can find hope in this message, as I do, because empowering women and girls to stop population growth is one solution that requires no technological interventions.
That’s why I hope you’ll make a gift of $30.00 towards our Summer Matching Gift Challenge today. There are still funds available, and the deadline has now been extended to September 15th! Your fellow generous supporters will match all gifts, 1 to 1, up to $100,000! [[link removed]]
Thank you for all you do to make our planet a safer and more sustainable place. I’m honored to stand beside you in this fight.
