The latest on our work and programs.
PROGRAM UPDATES:
Volviendo a Casa
"Returning Home"
Our deepest condolences are with the family of Jose Luis Rendon Diaz, the latest recipient in our Volviendo a Casa program. Jose Luis was a 30 year old husband and father that decided to migrate to the US from Puebla, as he was unemployed and wanted to provide a better future to his family. His dream was to find a job in the US and help his family by sending them money. The cause of death remains unknown, but Jose Luis’ family reports he was abandoned by the coyote guiding him, and was later found lifeless by Border Patrol in the San Diego/Tijuana desert.
Through our Volviendo a Casa program, we were able to coordinate with the Mexican consulate and pay for funeral expenses and transportation back to Mexico so that his family may say their final goodbyes. Jose Luis Rendon Diaz, May he Rest in Peace.
We are devastated at the loss of another life. We continue to denounce the many policies at work at our southern border, as well as recent reports of instances like tampering and shooting of gallons of water in the desert, migrants being pushed back into the Rio Grande by government agencies, and migrants being caged in the Arizona desert during heatwaves, which are at the root of these tragedies. Acts and policies which continue to dehumanize our migrant siblings, causing entirely preventable deaths. We remain committed to provide humanitarian aid to those crossing in hopes of preventing more deaths.

Day Laborer Outreach
We visited day laborers once again this past weekend and handed out care packages with food, water, “Know Your Rights,” hygiene kits, and of course lots of love and moral support. We are so grateful for the opportunity to continue gain the trust of this community so that they look to us as a resource in order to meet their many needs. A special shout out to our board member Jeff Dean for coming out and volunteering, as well as everyone who donated items to our wish list like safety glasses and snacks to help day laborers do their job!
If you missed this volunteer opportunity, be sure to stay on the lookout for our upcoming August Volunteer Event Calendar and check out the dates for our next Day Laborer Outreach, Water Drop and Caravan of Love.

News Spotlight:
Three-year-old asylum seeker dies after being bussed from Texas to Chicago
A three-year-old girl from Venezuela being transported to Chicago from Texas by bus with other migrants died at a local Illinois hospital after showing signs of illness, the Texas department of emergency management (TDEM) said on Friday.
“Once the child presented with health concerns, the bus pulled over and security personnel on board called 9-1-1 for emergency attention,” the TDEM said in a written statement.
“After the ambulance arrived, the bilingual security personnel translated for the parents and the paramedics who were providing care for the child,” the statement said. “The child was then taken to a local hospital to receive additional medical attention and was later pronounced deceased.”
Because the girl died in the Chicago area, the Illinois department of public health (IDPH) was investigating her death, a spokesperson told the Chicago Tribune.
“IDPH is working with local health officials, state police and federal authorities to the fullest extent possible to get answers in this tragic situation,” IDPH spokeswoman Lauri Sanders told the Tribune.

Ecosystems near Texas-Mexico border ‘choking’ from efforts to stop migrants
The leafy trees on Magali and Hugo Urbina’s 350-acre orchard next to the Rio Grande river in Eagle Pass, Texas, should be bursting with pecans this time of year. Instead, most are barren.
The Urbinas blame the clouds of dust kicked up by Texas officials in trucks and ATVs after the state government in recent months put fencing and roads along the riverbanks in a contentious effort to deter migration from Mexico, just across the river.
The Urbinas suspect the flurry of activity interfered with pollination on their orchard, Heavenly Farms, where the Texas state tree has flourished for decades.
“They’re choking,” Magali said. The sense of an invasion on their property has left the couple, Texas natives of Mexican descent who voted for Abbott, feeling blindsided by what they see as his agenda to publicize a crackdown on the border in the face of what the governor argues is a soft approach by Joe Biden, the US president and a Democrat.
