John, today is a historic day. August 18th marks over 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment – the landmark piece of legislation that gave women the right to vote.

Of course, the amendment was not perfect in its initial passing. Only white women would be allowed to vote until 35 years later, with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 expanding voting rights to all Americans, regardless of skin color.

It’s a stark reminder that rings true today: Even with as far as our great nation has come, there is still work to be done to live up to our democratic values.

Today, our voting rights are under attack. The far-right wants to diminish the power of the people because they know that when working folks show up at the polls, their anti-worker, anti-union, anti-choice, and anti-American agendas get voted out.

As a former voting rights attorney and an Iraq War veteran, defending our democracy is one of my top priorities in Washington. So on the 103rd anniversary of the 19th Amendment, will you stand with me in the fight to protect our voting rights?
