Tree planting in partnership with Riverford Organic Farmers

I have recently had the pleasure of visiting some farms with Zac Goodall from Riverford Organic Farmers, meeting some incredible families and saw how they are growing themselves out of poverty. Our relationship with Riverford Organic Farmers extends back over 20 years and we are proud to tell you about our latest project together. Earlier this year we launched the Responsible Carbon tree planting project, where 44,000 fruit trees have been planted Wolayita, Southern Ethiopia. 

This 15-year project is funded by Riverford Organic Farmers and will benefit nearly 3,000 families who have planted apple and avocado trees around their farms and in community-owned orchards.

These trees will provide additional nutrition and variety into the diets of farming families and any surplus produce can be sold for additional income. The farmers own the trees and decide where to plant them, making use of shade or soil stabilization on their land.

During the life of the project, the trees will sequester 27,000 tonnes of CO2, helping Riverford to achieve their ambitious goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2030. The amount of carbon sequestered will be audited and verified by UK-based organization, Climate Stewards.

“We are committed to reducing our 
carbon emissions wherever possible. This project helps to offset the remaining emissions we are unable to eliminate from our daily operations. I hope that more companies will recognize the importance of investing in quality offsets which provide for communities and for nature, as well as genuinely sequestering carbon.”

The trees are planted around existing farmland, so they haven't taken away any land from crop production: they enhance the land's productivity and the trees are more accessible for care and harvesting. 

To ensure that the farmers have all the support and training they need over the course of this life-changing project, we will be working closely with a local development association in Wolayita. The team in Ethiopia will regularly check in with the farming families so that they are getting the greatest benefit from growing the trees.
