Trump may not be headed to next week's Republican debate, but Democrats
will be there

The DNC plans to run television ads, purchase billboards and be on the
ground to offer its counterarguments to Republican criticism.

NBC News | Monica Alba

August 17, 2023

Donald Trump still hasn't said whether he will show up for the first
Republican primary debate in Milwaukee next week, but Democrats plan to be
there and talk about the former president either way.

President Joe Biden's re-election campaign will have a significant presence
on the ground and on the airwaves, according to plans top officials shared
exclusively with NBC News. The Democrats' message will be simple:
Regardless of whether Trump participates, the rest of the GOP field has
already embraced his worldview.

In a statement, campaign manager Jule Chavez Rodriguez said she believes
the showdown "will put on display just how extreme and out of touch the
Republican candidates are with the American people." [1]Read more

House, Senate Republicans team up to crack down on FTC for destroying
documents related to congressional probe

'Congress and the public deserve an explanation of why the FTC improperly
destroyed records': Cruz

Fox News | Brianna Herlihy

August 17, 2023

Top Republicans on Capitol Hill are vowing a crackdown on the Federal Trade
Commission (FTC) for allegedly destroying documents related to a
congressional probe.

"Be deleting documents, the FTC likely violated federal law. It also
impeded Congressional oversight of the FTC's recent, unprecedented actions,
including its proposed rule banning non-compete clauses," Sen. Ted Cruz, a
Texas Republican and ranking member on the Senate Commerce, Science, and
Transportation Committee, wrote in a letter to FTC Chair Lina Khan, which
was dated for Thursday and shown to Fox News Digital ahead of its release.

WG Economy: Gas Prices Jump To Highest Level All Year

WG Economy | David Winston

August 16, 2023

If you think gas is costing you more than it did a few weeks ago, you would
be right. According to the latest gas price tracking from the US Energy
Information Administration, gas prices have jumped to their highest level
all year - a national average of $3.96 for a gallon of gas. This is almost
a 30-cent increase from a month ago when the average for the week of July
17 was $3.68. As of EIA tracking this week, the new national average of
$3.96 sets a record for 2023 and marks an increase of $1.50 since the start
of the Biden administration when the national average for a gallon of gas
was $2.46. From our most recent update of the Presidential Inflation Rate
(based on the CPI), gas prices have gone up 53.4% since President Biden
took office. [3]WG Economy, August 16, 2023.pdf

Republicans introduce bill that could

abolish DC government

The Home Rule Act was signed into law in 1973 by President Richard Nixon
and went into effect in 1975.

WUSA9 | Alanea Cremen

August 15, 2023

A new bill is taking aim at D.C.'s government, more specifically ending it
and giving control to the federal government.

HR 5195 was introduced by Rep. Andrew Ogles who represents Tennessee's
District 5. The bill would repeal the District of Columbia Home Rule Act,
which gives local autonomy to D.C. and establishes branches of local
government, such as DC Council and the mayor's office.

The Congress.Gov website says no text has been submitted for the bill, so
the specifics Ogles is suggesting are unclear at this time.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton took to Twitter Tuesday, calling the bill an
attempt to abolish D.C.'s government. She added that repealing the Home
Rule Act would be "as undemocratic as abolishing Nashville's [government],
a city [Ogles] represents." R[4]ead more

Republicans need to stop fighting early voting. It's how we can win on
Election Day.

Republicans cannot afford to go into Election Day down thousands of votes -
that will all but guarantee a loss.

USA Today | Glenn Youngkin, Opinion contributor

August 13, 2023

Elections are competitions, and the principles for victory are
straightforward - which candidate has the most compelling vision,
communicates that vision best, and builds trust to turn promises made into
promises kept.

Yes, like any team sport in a tough game, the team that fields the best
players, executes the better strategy, and competes the hardest, wins.

In Virginia this fall, where every seat in the General Assembly is on the
ballot, the stakes could not be more consequential for the future of our
state. Republicans have an opportunity to cement our majority in the House,
flip the Senate, and take Virginia to the next level. [5]Read more

The mystery of Vivek Ramaswamy's rapid rise in the polls

The theories behind the longshot presidential contender's rise.

Politico | Steve Shepard

August 12, 2023

Two new polls of Republican primary voters released on Thursday showed
former President Donald Trump in first place by a wide margin. But what was
startling was who came in second.

The first shows Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in his usual spot far behind
Trump. The others hows 38-year-old first-time political candidate Vivek
Ramaswamy edging out DeSantis for second place.

Ramaswamy's early rise represents the most significant movement in the
still-nascent race for the GOP presidential nomination. Or does it? [6]Read

Experts throw cold water on Dem claims that Hawaii wildfires caused by
climate change

'Blaming this on weather and climate is misleading,' a top environmental
expert in Hawaii said

Fox News | Thomas Catenacci

August 11, 2023

Environmental experts are pushing back on claims that the devastating
wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, were caused by global warming, instead pointing
to poor state land management practices.

Over the last several days, wildfires have spread across western Maui,
razing much of the historic Lahaina Town and claiming the lives of more
than three dozen people, according to state officials. As first responders
continue to battle the devastating fires, some Democratic lawmakers have
been quick to blame the event on climate change and global warming.

"Heartbreaking fires in Hawaii! Scientists are clear that climate chaos
wreaking havoc on ecosystems everywhere is the new norm," Sen. Jeff
Merkley, D-Ore., said in a post on X. "We need to take action immediately
or else it will get even worse." [7]Read more

Republicans unveil effort to claw back school funds Biden admin is holding
over hunting, archery classes

Republican Rep Tenney tells Fox News Digital that Biden administration's
move to defund

school hunting programs is a 'power grab'

Fox News | Thomas Catenacci

August 11, 2023

A group of House Republicans led by Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., are
unveiling legislation to reverse the Biden administration's crackdown on
school hunting education and archery programs nationwide.

Tenney - joined by Reps. Russ Fulcher, R-Idaho, Jim Banks, R-Ind., and
Brandon Williams, R-N.Y. - plan to introduce the Protecting Hunting and
Archery in Schools Act, which would remove the current federal restriction
on funding hunting and archery programs. The bill comes after a Fox News
Digital report highlighting Education Department guidance that strips such
funding from schools nationwide.

"The Biden administration continues to advance its radical anti-Second
Amendment agenda by prohibiting ESEA funding for archery and shooting
sports programs," Tenney told Fox News Digital in a statement. "Upstate New
York schools offer hunting, archery, and shooting sports programs to teach
students how to responsibly handle firearms and respect our Second
Amendment Rights." [8]Read more

WG Discussion Points: The White House

Bets On Bidennomics

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

August 11, 2023

Politico [9]reports that the White House is not judging the success of the
Bidenomics rollout by what voters believe today, but what they will believe
a year from now. They are betting that over the next year, the economy will
improve, inflation will moderate and Republicans will focus on other
topics.

From Politico: ...About two months in, [Biden's] efforts to sell his
sweeping economic agenda don't appear to be working. Inside the White
House, aides remain confident the bet will pay off, adopting the mantra of
the hockey legend Wayne Gretzky: Skate to where the puck is going, not to
where it is now. "If you look at where the puck's going to be a year from
now," said a White House official granted anonymity to discuss strategy,
"inflation's going down and the term "Bidenomics" is going to come to
signify... President Biden has a plan... As for Republicans who continue to
ding Biden over rising prices, the official added, "they're skating right
around where the puck was yesterday."

The White House thinks that over the next year, they will be able to turn
around President Biden's economic job approval, which we show at 37-54
approve-disapprove. As shown in our tracking, the President started out in
a positive position with an economic approval of 55-35 approve-disapprove.
This means voters gave him the benefit of the doubt when he came into a
difficult situation as the country was emerging from COVID. But his
economic approval started to decline in the summer of 2021 following the
passage of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan in March and the
inflation started ticking up. Then when the White House and Democrats were
trying to pass their Build Back Better Legislation in July and August, his
approval declined further to 45-47 with more voters disapproving than
approving. [10]Read more
