Dear Friend,
A supporter got in touch with us after hearing a Today programme interview with Health Secretary Steve Barclay about NHS consultants receiving tax-free pensions.
We looked into this claim and found it to be incorrect. The Department for Health later admitted it was wrong after we contacted them.
This was only possible because of supporters like you, help recruit more supporters by sharing our mailing list on Facebook or Twitter/X:

FACT CHECKS
** NHS consultants don’t receive tax-free pensions ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
Health secretary Steve Barclay recently said that NHS consultants receive tax-free pensions. He also claimed that consultants will receive pensions of £73,000 per year upon retirement.
Full Fact looked into both of these claims. NHS consultants do not, in fact, receive tax-free pensions, as their pensions are subject to the same tax rules as other forms of income. Furthermore, the amount they receive on retirement will depend on their individual circumstances.

** No evidence that laser beams caused the fires in Hawaii ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
In the wake of the loss of more than 100 lives due to the catastrophic fires in Hawaii, a post on Facebook claimed that ‘directed energy weapons’ (DEWs), such as lasers, were responsible for igniting them. Similar allegations were made about the devastating 2018 fire in Paradise, California.
Full Fact examined these claims and could not find any substantiating evidence. The California fire of 2018 originated from a fallen power line, and the cause of the Hawaiian fire remains undetermined.

** Eagle fails to land in-work poverty figures ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
Labour MP Dame Angela Eagle claimed on BBC Politics Live last month that 60% of people in poverty are in work. This is not quite right.
While studies show that about 60% of people in relative poverty live in a household where at least one adult is in work, the latest government data for 2021/22 shows that for working age adults in poverty, 44% are in work.
