John, as a third-generation veteran, former teacher, mother, and proud Pennsylvanian, I know the topic of gun violence brings up a multitude of deeply personal feelings for many people.

Just over halfway through the year, we’ve already seen more than 420 mass shootings in the United States. Like me, I’m sure you’ve felt outraged, heartbroken, or hopeless at the cost of this senseless crisis – and that’s why I’ve been so keen to continue fighting for a solution.

I’ve been an outspoken champion of bipartisan legislation like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first gun violence legislation passed in the House and Senate in nearly 30 years.

With so many lives at risk, bipartisan compromise is the most effective way to keep our homes, schools, and neighborhoods safe.

Since the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act went into effect one year ago, we’ve seen significant investments in mental health resources and school safety that have worked to address gun violence at its source. It also strengthened restrictions on those under 21 and those convicted of domestic violence when attempting to purchase a firearm.

I’m honored to be in a position to make a difference – but frustrated by the magnitude of violence still left unaddressed. More than ever, we need commonsense, bipartisan gun safety legislation and increased coordination between federal, state, and local governments.
