Hi John,
We've received disheartening news today. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, Tallahassee Division has ruled against [[link removed]] plaintiffs challenging Florida’s “alien land law” SB 264. You can read our press statement here [[link removed]] .
I find it deeply unsettling that the court has declined to block this patently discriminatory law that limits property ownership based on national heritage. What's more troubling is Judge Winsor's reliance on a century-old legal precedent to uphold such a law – a stark reminder that past discriminatory practices persist and the urgency to challenge them at every turn.
This isn't just about one law; it's about the broader implications. Such a ruling threatens to strip basic rights from Iranian nationals, and other immigrant groups, potentially setting a precedent for further discriminatory measures. This also opens the door to a slippery slope to discrimination against Iranian-American dual citizens and green card holders. While we will continue to urge the plaintiffs to appeal this decision, we must also rally our collective strength for the battles ahead.
The courts may not always be our safeguard, as we know by the Supreme Court's endorsement of Trump’s Muslim ban. But as we've seen in states like Texas , when we unite politically, and organize collectively , we can defeat xenophobic bills like this.
