Dangerous ‘Swatting’ Incidents Target Dozens of Synagogues and other Organizations

As reported in yesterday’s New York Times...

“The Anti-Defamation League has tracked 26 calls threatening violence at synagogues from New York to California over the last month.

The hoax calls to police departments or suicide hotlines around the country say that a man is considering killing himself and others or that a bomb has been placed in a building.

The address given on the phone belongs to a synagogue that is livestreaming its services. In some cases, the callers watch in real time as police interrupt frightened worshipers. Later, clips of the incidents are posted online.”

ADL is working with law enforcement and community partners to mitigate the disruption by a group of online trolls who swat and call in fake bomb threats. Swatting is deliberately reporting a false crime or emergency with the goal of evoking an aggressive response (often a SWAT team) from law enforcement to a target’s residence or place of work to harass and intimidate them.

These trolls, who employ highly antisemitic language during their calls, have targeted over two dozen synagogues and two ADL offices. They also appear to have expanded their targets to include several Black churches and a news organization.

The swatting calls posed a different type of threat than graffiti, slurs and other common antisemitic acts, noted Oren Segal, VP of the ADL Center on Extremism.

“It’s the people that are anonymous, that are watching, that are getting excited by what they’re seeing and that may be animated to take it to the next level. This is so dangerous because we don’t know who else is watching and what they might do based on what they’re seeing.”

What’s News

EXTREMIST ARRESTED: Federal authorities

arrested white supremacist Hardy Lloyd; the arrest follows years of Lloyd’s incendiary and threatening online posts, but the charges are tied to his activities surrounding the trial of Robert Bowers, the white supremacist who murdered 11 people at the Tree of Life Synagogue. Lloyd is charged with obstruction of the due administration of justice, transmitting threats in interstate and foreign commerce and witness tampering. ADL has been tracking Lloyd and his activities since at least 2003.

Southern California Jewish Security Alliance. ADL and the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles are combining their expertise to better prevent and respond to antisemitism. The Community Security Service has signed on as the first partner organization. Recent threats to the Jewish community — from this month’s spate of “swattings” of local synagogues to the Pico-Robertson shootings in February, to the recent arrest of a dangerous white supremacist in Reseda — have demonstrated a growing need to enhance security through intelligence sharing and partnership.

ALARMING ATTITUDES:Twenty percent of Americans believe six or more antisemitic tropes, which is significantly more than the 11 percent that ADL found in 2019 and is the highest level measured in decades. An alarming finding from the recent study of

A GROWING THREAT: ADL SVP for International Affairs, Marina Rosenberg, a former Israeli ambassador, co-writes a

JPost column warning that... From narratives of a powerful Jewish lobby, supposedly in control of governments and media to support Israel, to calls to “globalize the Intifada” — antisemitism in segments of the political Left is an alarming and growing trend in Europe. While the far-right continues to pose a more violent threat to Jews worldwide, antisemitism stemming from certain left-leaning groups is more pervasive in a day-to-day sense and poses a different kind of threat, especially in Europe.

A Turkish lawyer's refashioning of the #antisemitic blood libel myth by inventing a Jewish rite of passage involving the sacrifice of girls is a vile slander that endangers the Turkish Jewish community. Lawyers should fight hate crimes, not incite them.
