British Columbia Sets Electricity Use Record in Trying to Beat the Heat
BC Hydro

BC Hydro says BC set a record for electricity consumption on Monday, August 14 due to the ongoing heat wave across the province.

Consumption reached over 8,400 megawatts as British Columbians turned to air conditioning (AC) and fans to cool down. BC Hydro says heat waves can result in an addition of over 1,000 megawatts, which is the equivalent of turning on about 1 million portable AC units.

Electricity demand is expected to remain high until temperatures decrease. While the demand for power is higher than average with the hot temperatures, BC Hydro wants to assure its customers that its renewable and reliable, hydroelectric system can meet the additional demand.

Red Tape Delays: How an Invisible Woodpecker is Delaying a Much-Needed School in Coquitlam
Business in Vancouver

Just when you think you've heard of every possible red tape delay to building housing and critical infrastructure in British Columbia, a new, ever-more-absurd government regulation comes along.

Construction on a badly-needed, long-promised, $135 million middle and high school on Coquitlam's Burke Mountain has been held up by an empty hole in a single tree.

The delay is caused by an overreaching policy brought in by the federal government — the result of regulations that stakeholders said would be a problem from the moment it was first proposed.

Click here to read the story of how an empty hole could delay construction for up to three years.

CHBA BC has previously raised this regulation as a barrier to supply that is unnecessarily slowing the development of new projects in the province. While well-meaning, it is misdirected policy like this that needs to change to ensure much-needed new homes can get built.

Housing Market Index Shows Builder Confidence Improves Slightly in Q2
CHBA

For a second consecutive quarter, CHBA has seen builder confidence rise, but a lack of well-qualified buyers is hurting sentiment and providing a drag on future starts according to the most recent Housing Market Index (HMI) Report.

Both the single-family and multi-family HMIs increased slightly once again in the second quarter, improving from the lows recorded in Q4 2022. The Q2 CHBA HMI for single-family builders registered 39.9, 5.6 points above 34.3 recorded in Q1. The multi-family HMI in Q2 was 41.0, up 7.5 points from 33.5 in Q1. A pause from the Bank of Canada on increasing interest rates in Q1, allowing buyers time to adjust to the new financing environment, was supportive of an improvement in builder sentiment.
