Our community makes our mission possible every day

Families in Transition is on a mission to prevent and break the cycle of homelessness in New Hampshire. Every day, we support families and individuals by providing invaluable services when they need them most. Our impact and reach are made possible by the incredible resources, community, and staff that work together to help us fulfill our mission.

Congratulations to our team at Outfitters!

We are thrilled to share that Outfitters Thrift Store has been voted one of the best thrift stores in New Hampshire, according to the 2023 Union Leader Reader’s Choice Awards!

It is an honor to be recognized by the community for all the hard work that goes into running a donation-based store.

Your donations of clothing and household items are an essential part of our mission! Every family or individual moving into our housing is provided with a voucher to use in the store. With this voucher, they can purchase essential clothing items, kitchen supplies, and whatever else they need to feel at home. Last year, we supplied over $33,000 worth of merchandise to our program participants free of charge.

Outfitters is located at 394 Second St., Manchester, NH 03102. Store hours are Monday – Saturday, 8 AM to 4 PM. Donation hours are Monday – Saturday, 8:30 AM – 3 PM. Follow us on Facebook ([link removed]) and Instagram ([link removed]) to stay up-to-date with the latest happenings at Outfitters!

The inside scoop on volunteering

Every April, we celebrate National Volunteer Week. But our volunteers deserve to be celebrated every single day. You’ll find corporate groups such as Fidelity, Northwestern Mutual, and GE Aerospace or individuals volunteering across the organization. They help sort groceries at our Food Pantry, serve lunch at our Adult Emergency Shelter, stock shelves at Outfitters, host activities for children at our Family Shelter, and even hold signs along the route of the Walk Against Hunger. And these are just a few of the ways volunteers help Families in Transition achieve our mission.

We also encourage groups or corporate teams to volunteer for a day of service. This year we organized cleaning days for UNH students and Merchants Auto employees to help us give our properties a spring clean both inside and out. With the holidays coming soon, now is the time to consider donating your time! To coordinate a service project, don't hesitate to contact our volunteer team at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]).

Special Request: We are looking for volunteers to assist with immediate needs like social media marketing, dishwashing, and afternoon shifts at the food pantry. Internship credit is available for the social media position, click here to learn more ([link removed]).

New to volunteering? Create a GivePulse account ([link removed]) and attend a volunteer orientation session to start picking up shifts in the food pantry or kitchen!

Meet the Families in Transition team

The most valuable and treasured asset to our mission is, without a doubt, our incredible staff! They are the people that make our mission happen every day. From our front-line workers to our directors and chiefs, everyone serves our community and brings hope to families and adults dealing with homelessness, food insecurity, and substance abuse.

This month, let’s meet Sarah Bernier, our Director of Substance Use Services, at the Willows Substance Use Treatment Center.

Sarah has been with Families in Transition for over three years and is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) and a Master Level Drug and Alcohol Counselor (MLADC). She oversees multiple programs, including Recovery Housing, Transitional Living Programs, Intensive Outpatient Programming, and Outpatient Services.

Sarah currently sits on the New Hampshire Providers Association board. Her primary focus through her work is providing individualized treatment for anyone living with substance use and mental health disorders. She continues to be an advocate for individualized treatment, creative solutions, and harm reduction to support multiple pathways to recovery and overall wellness.
