Dear Friend,

I won’t sugarcoat it: We face a grave new threat from fossil fuel infrastructure in the Arctic.

The Biden administration recently approved the Alaska Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Project — a carbon bomb 10 times bigger than the Willow Project.

So last Friday, we sued to stop it.

The Alaska LNG Project includes an 807-mile pipeline and an LNG export terminal in Cook Inlet, and would release between 2.4 and 2.7 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas over its lifetime.

Earthjustice is taking legal action to reverse the administration’s approval. We will not let the administration and fossil fuel companies accelerate the climate crisis and scar public lands.

Our 200+ attorneys proudly represent our clients free of charge, so we rely on donations from supporters who care about climate change and the environment to fund our litigation. With supporters like you fighting alongside us, we can keep fossil fuels in the ground and slow global warming. Join the fight today.

The science is clear: We must stop new fossil fuel extraction. This year, the World Meteorological Organization concluded that average global temperatures will likely breach 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming for at least one entire year by 2027.

Earthjustice is suing to prevent construction of dozens of new fossil fuel projects. But the Alaska LNG Project is particularly massive and destructive, with a projected annual climate impact equivalent to operating 19-21 coal-fired power plants.

The Alaska LNG Project would extract natural gas from the Arctic that would otherwise remain in the ground without causing climate harm. Construction would include an 807-mile pipeline, gas treatment facilities, a liquefication plant, and a marine export terminal on Cook Inlet, vastly increasing industrial traffic in an already busy water body that offers critical habitat for endangered beluga whales.

Like many fossil fuel projects we are attempting to stop, gas from the Alaska LNG Project would not even be burned until 2030 or later, the year by which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that nations must slash greenhouse gas emissions 50% below pre-industrial levels.

But despite the clear risks, the Department of Energy approved exports from this disastrous project and ignored its severe climate impact. On Friday, we sued the Department of Energy to reverse their approval and will pursue all appropriate legal action to stop this project.

Earthjustice is fighting to stop fossil fuel infrastructure in dozens of states across the country, and we are successful in many cases. But our strength depends on you.

As we’ve written in past emails, we are in the midst of a challenging fundraising environment. This month, we are behind on our fundraising goals. With your support, we can reach our goals and fully fund critical lawsuits to protect our planet. Can you donate today and help us fight climate change?
