The new estuary, known as Chinook Wind, provides the complex, intertidal habitat young salmon need as they transition from freshwater to saltwater on their journey to Puget Sound. The project team included members of Green Start, a King County Jobs and Housing Program that offers ecological career opportunities to people experiencing homelessness.

‘A pathway to zero waste’
We’re exploring new technologies that can help us achieve Re+, our initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by waste. Our Solid Waste Division recently toured a Georgia-Pacific facility in Toledo, Ore., to see how their new technology sorts garbage, recovering recyclable materials like paper and metal to reduce the amount of materials that end up buried in landfills.

Blink and you’d probably miss the driveway into Vashon Treatment Plant. Everything about this plant is pint-sized, a much scaled-down version of the massive clean water facilities servicing the mainland.
Elizabeth Corliss has been at the helm of Vashon Treatment Plant for four years now. Everyone calls her Lizzy.
