The Evergreen: From asphalt to an estuary and CHOMP! returns Aug. 19

We transformed dilapidated buildings along the Duwamish River into an estuary, providing ideal habitat for young salmon and greenspace for communities

The new estuary, known as Chinook Wind, provides the complex, intertidal habitat young salmon need as they transition from freshwater to saltwater on their journey to Puget Sound. The project team included members of Green Start, a King County Jobs and Housing Program that offers ecological career opportunities to people experiencing homelessness.

King County Parks will host the 10th annual CHOMP! at Marymoor Park on Aug. 19, offering tasty food, live music, sustainable workshops, and free family activities. Admission is free!

‘A pathway to zero waste’

We’re exploring new technologies that can help us achieve Re+, our initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by waste. Our Solid Waste Division recently toured a Georgia-Pacific facility in Toledo, Ore., to see how their new technology sorts garbage, recovering recyclable materials like paper and metal to reduce the amount of materials that end up buried in landfills.

Blink and you’d probably miss the driveway into Vashon Treatment Plant. Everything about this plant is pint-sized, a much scaled-down version of the massive clean water facilities servicing the mainland.  

Elizabeth Corliss has been at the helm of Vashon Treatment Plant for four years now. Everyone calls her Lizzy. She grew up on Vashon and never knew the treatment plant was there until she joined King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD). “I tell people what I do, and they’re like, ‘What, we have that?’

Trailhead Direct, our transit-to-trails service connecting hikers to Mount Si, Mount Teneriffe, and Little Si will operate on Labor Day, the last day of service for the 2023 season.
