BACK TO SCHOOL: As we head into another post-pandemic school year, parents are justifiably concerned about the quality and transparency of their residentially-assigned schools. While many parents like their children’s teachers and the convenience and familiarity of neighborhood schools, they regularly encounter school systems that refuse to respond to concerns or meet their children’s individual needs. Unfortunately, the K-12 education system in most areas of the country prioritized the demands of unionized adults and squandered $190 billion in supplemental education funding provided by the federal government, resulting in historically low academic scores, persistent learning loss and discipline issues, and chronic absenteeism. School districts that willingly cave to teachers unions’ demands and prioritize systems over students will continue to struggle.

Fortunately, many states prioritize students over systems and offer scholarship and education savings account (ESA) programs, as well as open enrollment, course choice, magnet programs, and charter school options. With more states offering expansive education freedom policies than ever before, students can access the education environment that works best for them, giving parents the control and leverage they deserve.

** The AFT Resolves To Address Any Issue Except School Issues ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) quietly added new resolutions for 2023 on their website, and none of them are related to improving public education. According to the AFT, the resolutions address “a wide range of issues that affect members in our different membership constituencies” and other “national and international issues of importance to the union and to our vision for the country.” Unsurprisingly, issues like learning loss, plummeting nationwide academic achievement scores, chronic absenteeism, and the negative consequences of mandated school enrollment based on income and zip code are not priorities. A disturbing report from the Defense of Freedom Institute details what they call an “epidemic of sexual abuse” in public schools across the country. For decades, hospital services price inflation has been rising sharply, up 220% since 2000, far above overall inflation and inflation for general medical care services, along with pretty much everything else. American Enterprise Institute’s Mark Perry, has carefully tracked this disheartening spike, noting that more government intervention leads to higher costs, especially for so-called non-tradeables.

** Americans Are Straddling a Record $1 Trillion in Credit Card Debt ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
The economy notched a new record last month—and it’s not a good one. For the first time, Americans’ credit card debt levels surpassed $1 trillion. During past recessions and economic recoveries, debt levels never reached this high, signaling that despite headlines about economic growth and job creation, households are under strain from rising prices. When the new administration and Democratic-led Congress accelerated massive and unnecessary federal spending in 2021, they touched off generation-high inflation that batters households with financial pressure two years later.
