Wow. It’s been a couple weeks now, but we’re still completely floored by the response to the Payback Project. We’ve already gotten so much done, but we’re running into a problem:

See, Indivisibles are using a peer-to-peer texting program called TextOut to get voters in key states involved in holding their senators accountable. At the pace we’d been going (before this entire impeachment sham), we expected to have sent about 140,000 text messages by this month. Instead, literally hundreds of you stepped up, and we’ve sent more than 500,000 texts to voters. That’s the kind of engagement we’d normally see a few weeks before the general election, and it’s only February.

The problem? We’re charged by the text (see our P.S. note below), and all that enthusiasm means we’re spending through our texting budget a lot faster than we expected. Right now, we’ve spent almost $21,000 more than we planned for this point, and we need to keep spending to reach as many voters as we can while they’re energized.

We started this project because we’re tired of Senate Republicans holding our democracy hostage to maintain their power. Turns out, thousands of you are too: we’ve seen completely unprecedented amounts of action and engagement nationwide.

Indivisibles (maybe including you!) are directly texting with voters and activists in our target states and building the grassroots power we need to take back the Senate and kick the worst GOP senators out of office. And the program is growing every day!

It’s all part of our four-step plan to win in states across the country: building accountability, boosting local political power, organizing to win, and getting out the vote. 

All those steps are fundamental to taking back the Senate in November. But they’re all impossible without your support. So today we’re asking you to donate $10 to help us raise $21,000 to make up the gap, support our texting program, take back the Senate, and fund all of Indivisible’s work.

P.S. -- Often, when we send emails about our texting budget, people ask “Why don’t you just get an unlimited plan?” We wish it were that easy! But it takes a lot of functionality to accomplish a massive program like this: data collection, moderation features, a tool to let people send texts from their computers, technology to protect Indivisibles' private phone numbers from trolls and more. All that specialized technology is priced very differently from individual cell phone plans.
