Dear Friend of MCV,

I’m just getting home from Portland, where I joined some of our partners to celebrate the most impactful climate action I’ve seen in my career. Exactly one year ago today, President Biden signed the historic Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) into law.

Together with Maine State Senators Mark Lawrence and Chip Curry, and Maine AFL-CIO President Cynthia Phinney, I had the opportunity to speak about the results that Maine is already seeing from, as Congresswoman Pingree – a champion of the IRA – has put it, “the most significant climate legislation in U.S. history.”

The IRA, also known as the affordable clean energy plan, provides funding to facilitate the clean energy transition. At a time when we’re seeing the effects of climate change on our doorstep, the IRA is projected to significantly cut the pollution that is contributing to climate change – reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030. [1]

When it comes to addressing the climate crisis in Maine, offshore wind is the biggest lever we can pull. Inspired by the initiatives in the IRA, the Maine legislature passed a landmark bill to jumpstart the offshore wind industry in Maine with high standards for labor, equity, and the environment. Maine is poised to set a national example for how to responsibly develop new, affordable energy sources, grow good-paying jobs for our workers, and do so without compromising Maine values.

Since the passage of the IRA, Maine has already seen at least $6 million dollars of investment and hundreds of new jobs across our state, with more to come. [2]

For Maine families, this means savings : up to $2000 off for energy-saving technologies like heat pumps, up to $1,200 off for other home weatherization and energy efficiency improvements, reductions in the cost of electric vehicles, and so much more. [3]

Maine won’t wait to act on climate, and because of the IRA, Maine doesn’t have to wait. Happy IRA-iversary!

Onward,
