ROI of Malaria Vaccine in Sub-Saharan Africa Malaria remains a significant global health concern, with over 200 million estimated malaria cases reported worldwide in 2021, and 95 percent of these cases occurring in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region.
In the August issue of Health Affairs, Joshua Mak and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins University calculate the return on investment (ROI) for the introduction and continuation of a four-dose malaria vaccine from 2021–30 in twenty sub-Saharan African countries.
After using the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute's model, they estimate a base ROI of 0.42, estimating that the malaria vaccine would avert $4.04 billion in cost of illness between 2021–30. After using the Imperial College London Model, they estimate a base ROI of 2.3 and $9.41 billion in cost of illness averted.
Both calculations indicate that the introduction and implementation of the malaria vaccine has resulted in a positive ROI.
