[1]Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. 1 in 5
Americans will get it in their lifetime.

Yet, our sunscreen technology is far behind the rest of the world. The
last time the FDA approved a new UV filter to block sun damage was in
1996. Since then, the EU has approved 30 new UV filters.

The FDA regulates sunscreen as a drug, rather than a cosmetic. That should
be a good thing, because we want to ensure consumer safety, but these
regulations are not actually working as intended. A Sloan-Kettering study
found that half of U.S. sunscreens provide less protection than their
European counterparts.^1

you to email your Member of Congress and ask them to strengthen the FDA’s
regulatory process and fund public research into sunscreen filters.

In addition to providing better protection, many European and Asian
sunscreens are also easier to apply and don’t leave a white cast. That’s
because foreign sunscreen makers have access to active ingredients that
the FDA hasn’t yet approved. This isn’t just a cosmetic issue. When
sunscreens are easy to use, people will use them more — and that equals
better sun protection.

We know there are a lot of important issues out there you can spend your
time organizing around. But as the United Farm Workers said, sun
protection is a working-class issue. We just need your help to make it a
priority in Washington.
