As internal conflict grips Sudan, more women are being targeted by sexual violence as a weapon of war.

'Don’t let the other soldiers watch': Rape as weapon in Sudan war
— Al Jazeera , Aug 14, 2023

A new Al Jazeera profile details how women are trapped in the middle of the emerging conflict — including heartbreaking testimony from survivors of rape.

UNFPA is coordinating efforts with local partners to ramp up urgently needed support and services for violence prevention and clinical management of rape to meet the health and protection needs of displaced women and girls.

But the needs of women and girls are the first to be ignored during times of conflict — so we cannot look away while more are victimized by sexual violence as a weapon of war.

Millions of women are counting on your support. Deliver the gift of lifesaving care for women and girls living in warzones with a donation today: [[link removed]]

According to UN estimates, nearly 80% of Sudan’s hospitals were out of service by July due to ongoing fighting, fuel shortages, and lack of resources. Rape kits aren’t easily found, and even medical centers aren’t spared from the ravages of war, with a maternity hospital targeted in an attack earlier this year.

“There were specialists at some hospitals we would transfer rape cases to, but now hospitals aren’t working — all we can do is advise them what to do, where to go, which meds to get,” Labib, a psychologist volunteering in Sudan, told Al Jazeera.

Even in the darkest days, your gifts ensure that UNFPA can keep delivering lifesaving care to survivors of rape and sexual violence — in the form of sensitive and confidential care post-abuse care, mental health counseling , so survivors of violence can rebuild their lives, legal aid , so offenders are brought to justice, and safe spaces , where survivors can connect with their community. And across Sudan, we are continuing to reach women and girls with trained midwives to deliver safe births, mobile clinics to reach survivors in even the most remote areas, and dignity kits to help displaced women and girls manage their periods.

As the situation in Sudan continues to escalate, more women and girls will be displaced and at increased risk of sexual violence. Your donations are critically needed to intervene with violence prevention and clinical services.

Please: Make an emergency gift to deliver lifesaving care to women and girls in Sudan and beyond. Millions remain at risk as violence escalates and health centers shut their doors. [[link removed]]
