Berridge day of action

Berridge day of action

In June, local Councillors, council officers and partners held a ‘Day of Action’ in Berridge Ward.

This involved lots of ‘litter picks’ with children, staff from a local school as well as officers. The litter picks have been taking place on a monthly basis with children from Djanogly Northgate primary school helping out. The volunteers supported the councillors to clean streets and green spaces. An information event was arranged at the Sainsbury's car park, Perry Road, which gave residents an opportunity to find out what services they can access as well as support around energy and finance advice. The Community Protection officer coordinated the door knocking session for bins on streets and officers from selective licensing carried out home visits. Thank you to the fire service for visiting homes for safety checks. The police also liaised with local supermarkets to discuss the increase in begging and how to work together to reduce this. Casework was also picked up throughout the day.

Planters outside the Djanogoly Northgate Primary School

Planter

After securing additional funding through the Government’s Active Travel Fund, Berridge Councillors ensured that planters were placed outside the Djanogoly Northgate Primary School.

The roads outside the school are very busy at school drop off and pick up times. This leads to traffic congestion, idling vehicles, pavement parking and limited opportunities for pedestrians to cross the road, as well as difficulties for residents and businesses. The Councillors wanted to change this by reducing the amount of traffic on the roads outside schools. The planter will help to provide a safe and welcoming space to encourage more children and parents to walk, scoot and cycle to school.

Local community events

Local community event

From the ward budget, Councillors funded three local events to community groups for residents to enjoy, as well as having the pleasure of having the Jungle Jellyfish Theatre.

Event

Karimia Institute

Karimia Institute hosted a diverse multi-cultural festival to celebrate the rich diversity communities in Nottingham. The festival took place at the Forest Recreation Ground, and its tremendous success left everyone thrilled and inspired.

Take 1

The organisation provided a range of activities and entertainment and games for children to participate in on a school holiday day. With the local community being made up of a diverse range of different cultures and ethnicities, a cohesive day was enjoyed in a great way to bring the communities together. The activities were based at the Forest Recreation ground for a fun day as this is a popular area, where a lot of residences regularly use.

The African Festival

The festival reflects on the diversity of people, their backgrounds and circumstances which can be appreciated and positively valued. The event builds contacts, support and integration and brings people together from a variety of faiths, cultures, and backgrounds to celebrate each other’s differences. The community has an opportunity to engage in music, dance, arts, food, cultural dress, and a wide range of activities for all ages. It also raises awareness about local issues and the need for social change without losing individuals culture and traditions.

Jungle event

Jungle Jellyfish Theatre

Berridge had the pleasure of hosting the Joyful Family Theatre Show, Jungle book, at the Forest Recreation ground, with free refreshments, stalls, and activities. The company does live performances with songs and puppetry as well as lots of audience involvement for children aged 3+. All their work is focused on making live theatre fun, interactive and accessible to everyone.

The Sheriff of Nottingham

Sheriff

The Sheriff of Nottingham is now your Councillor, Shuguftah Quddoos.

The role of the Sheriff is to promote Nottingham as a destination for visitors for short breaks, conferences, business and shopping and to encourage local residents to use and take part in cultural/ leisure activities opportunities in the city and county.

Councillor Shuguftah was delighted to open a project in the Berridge ward last week. She celebrated the opening of 6 new self-contained homes for homeless people in Nottingham delivered by Framework Charity.

Streets for People programme making good progress

Streets for people

Over 70 resurfacing schemes have been completed so far across the city.

In 2021, the council successfully bid as part of a competitive process for money from the Government’s Levelling Up fund to improve streets and local town centres, and make walking and cycling easier and safer.

Nottingham City Council has approved ÂŁ11million of improvements to make our neighbourhoods greener, safer, better places to get around. Streets that have been improved so far include:

  • Roads - Berridge Road East, Central Avenue and Tettenbury Road
  • Paths - Cairo Street, Girton Road and Valmont Road

We are also setting money aside for tree work and bin replacements. You can find out more by visiting the streets for people website.
