Democrats,

June marked one year since the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned the nearly 50 years of federal protections for abortion rights guaranteed by Roe v. Wade. Republicans across the country and even here in New Mexico promise that they’ll continue to decimate reproductive rights. If we want to ensure reproductive rights remain protected, we have to elect Democrats up-and-down the ballot.

Throughout my tenure as Governor, I’ve worked with Democratic legislators to ensure New Mexico remains a safe place for patients and providers of abortion care and reproductive health care.

Since I became Governor, some of the pro-choice accomplishments Democrats have made include: 

• Overturning New Mexico’s outdated abortion ban in 2021, preemptively protecting abortion rights in our state even before the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.
• Crafting and enacting into law House Bill 7, the Reproductive and Gender-Affirming Care Act, to prohibit municipalities and local governments from restricting access to reproductive or gender-affirming care.
• Passing Senate Bill 13, Reproductive Health Provider Protections, which I signed into law this year. This codifies my 2022 executive order to protect confidential information of patients and providers of reproductive and gender-affirming care, including abortions, from other states’ criminal liability and discrimination.

The work doesn’t stop there. As Governor, I dedicated $10 million from my capital outlay funding for a full-spectrum reproductive health clinic in southern New Mexico.

The Democratic Party of New Mexico works year-round to help elect pro-choice Democratic candidates at every level of government, from the White House to the Roundhouse. And with the future of abortion rights on the ballot in upcoming elections, it’s more critical than ever that we support their work to build the grassroots infrastructure across the state that will put Democrats into office. 

President Biden has called on Congress to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade, but that can only happen if he and every Democratic member of our federal delegation are reelected. Not to mention, we can only continue protecting abortion at the state level here in New Mexico if we continue electing Democrats to our State House and Senate, both of which are on the ballot in the next general election. 

The Democratic Party of New Mexico needs to build the campaign infrastructure and statewide grassroots efforts now in order to achieve victory in the upcoming election. As a critical part of my reelection campaign last year, I know that their ability to build the statewide Democratic grassroots effort across New Mexico ahead of the upcoming election is largely dependent on their ability to raise the necessary resources well in advance.
