Meeting with NASA’s Michoud Facility
I recently had the privilege of meeting with representatives from the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility located in New Orleans. NASA’s Michoud Facility is home to the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket program which has been a key component to our country’s space program going back to the Apollo mission.
The SLS is the most powerful rocket ever built by NASA, and it’s the only rocket that can send the United States back to the Moon on a single mission. The rocket program at NASA’s Michoud Facility also plays a critical role as we embark on new, ambitious missions to places such as Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter.
Through their development of the equipment and technology that will take our astronauts back into space, the Michoud Facility is a critical supporter of essential jobs in our community and it serves as a critical asset to the economy of Southeast Louisiana and beyond.
I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that we invest in facilities like Michoud, and the powerful technologies being developed there that will continue playing a vital role in America’s future space exploration.
Meeting with visitors from NASA's Michoud Facility
With the SLS rocket from NASA’s Michoud Facility, NASA is working to land the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024 through the Artemis program.
In January, the first SLS rocket core stage for NASA’s Artemis program was completed at the NASA Michoud Facility and sent to NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi in preparation for the Green Run test series, the final test ahead of the agency’s official Artemis launch to the Moon.
In recognition of this momentous achievement, I presented Cesar Ford, the Manager of the SLS Production Operations, with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of NASA’s Michoud Facility’s historic milestone in delivering the first SLS rocket core stage that will help propel Americans to the moon.
It was an honor to meet with folks from NASA’s Michoud Facility and to recognize them for their groundbreaking contributions to our nation’s space program. It’s imperative that we continue to support these programs as they contribute to a robust space exploration program that will help advance America’s economic, scientific, and security interests.
