Impact of New Drug Competition on Net Prices And Spending
In the August issue of Health Affairs,
<[link removed]>Sean
Dickson and his team of coauthors examine the effects of the
introduction of new brand-name pharmaceutical competitors on the net
prices of existing pharmaceutical products.
After examining new competitive therapies approved between 2013-17, they
find that "the introduction of new therapeutic competition was
associated with a 4.2 percent decrease in annual net price growth and
resulted in net prices that were 6.8 percent lower, on average, than net
prices before competition."
The introduction of new competitive therapies also led to increases in
spending. Dickson and coauthors also determine that the entry of
competition during 2013-17 lowered commercial drug spending by $10.4
billion.
Read the August issue of Health Affairs for more newly published
research on prescription drugs.
