Urge President Biden to declare a climate emergency.
John,
Jane Fonda here. Corporate greed and inaction by our elected officials are destroying the climate and endangering our communities.
The global systems we all depend on are suffering. The devastation in Maui is heartbreaking. Unfortunately, this is only the most recent example of climate change related destruction.
Ocean temperatures are skyrocketing and extreme weather events like floods, record heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, and devastating hurricanes are intensifying and happening more frequently.
While everyone is feeling the changing climate, our most vulnerable communities are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. Will this be our new “normal?” I’ve committed the rest of my life to do everything I can to make sure the answer is no.
Despite the president’s suggestion that he “practically speaking” has declared a climate emergency, he still refuses to leverage his position to make real progress. Invoking the National Emergencies Act to declare a climate emergency would allow the president to:
Halt the approval of new fossil fuel projects.
Stop fossil fuel exports.
End fossil fuel leasing on federal lands.
Launch a just, equitable renewable energy revolution.
The climate crisis is here. The only way to change course and avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis is to phase down fossil fuels and drastically scale up alternative energy sources.
On September 17th, thousands of people from across the country are joining the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City, and we hope you can be there, but you don’t have to wait until then to act. Tell President Biden to act NOW by declaring a climate emergency!
President Biden has the power to stop disastrous fossil fuel projects and protect the climate we all depend on by declaring a national climate emergency. We know he can be the climate leader we need for this moment, and we need him to know that is exactly what we expect. The climate crisis requires his bold leadership NOW, not tomorrow.
