Friend,
You may have heard how President Trump’s proposed budget would hurt Medicare, Social Security, and other earned benefits, but
did you catch his plan to kill the Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness program (PSLF)?
PSLF allows teachers, nurses, and other public service workers who’ve dutifully paid their student loans for 10 years to have the balance forgiven. With student loan debt exceeding $1.6
trillion nationwide, leaders should be working on legislation that can ease the burden of paying for higher education, not killing good programs.
That’s why I introduced the bipartisan
Young Farmer Success Act, to allow new and beginning farmers to apply for
PSLF. But this bipartisan bill is now at risk because of Trump’s proposal to eliminate all student loan forgiveness.
Friend, if you want to protect student loan forgiveness and expand it to young farmers, please sign your name and become a citizen cosponsor of the Young Farmer Success Act.
According to the group Young Farmers, 81% of young farmers hold bachelor’s or advanced degrees. That means it’s very likely most young people who want to begin farming also have student loan debt.
Empowering young people to pursue careers in agriculture is essential to our economy here in the 19th district and across the country. This administration doesn’t seem to concern itself with the plight of family farms or working people, as evidenced by a disastrous trade war with China and the GOP tax bill.
In the 34 town halls I’ve attended across our district, I’ve learned of the need to support our local economies and to provide longevity and security in an ever-changing global economy.
To do that, we need to empower young people to complete higher education and contribute to the economy unencumbered by crushing student loan debt.
But we need your help to do that. If you think American farmers should be able to have crushing student loans debt forgiven then please sign your name and support the Young Farmer Success Act.
Thank you,
Antonio
