Wisconsin is home to some of the most competitive elections in the country.

• Donald Trump won the state by 0.77% in 2016;
• Joe Biden defeated him by an even narrower margin of 0.63% in 2020;
• And Republican Ron Johnson won Wisconsin’s other Senate seat by just 1% last year.

So it’s no surprise that Republicans chose Milwaukee as the site of their first presidential debate of the cycle.

In just one week, GOP presidential candidates, media outlets, and thousands of Republican supporters will descend upon Wisconsin for the first debate — and we should get used to this national attention.

With 10 electoral votes and a Senate seat that could determine which party controls the majority, Wisconsin will be a popular pitstop for Republicans — including during the Republican National Convention which will be held back here in Milwaukee next July.
