As you’ve likely noticed, political races for federal and statewide office tend to get the most coverage in the news. However, local officeholders make some of the most influential decisions concerning our everyday lives – and many of the rooms where these critical decisions are being made are majority male.

That is why Her Bold Move is dedicated to supporting women running for these offices – and we are excited to announce our endorsement of Carrie Ingersoll-Wood, who is running for County Legislator in Onondaga County, NY.

Here’s why this endorsement is exciting:

• There are 17 legislators in this county’s Legislature – only 6 are women. Carrie would serve as one more much-needed voice for women in her area.

• In the 43 years since Carrie’s district’s office was established, it has only been held by three people – and all three of them have been Republican men.

• This district has historically been considered Republican. But for the first time, the Board for the Town of Manlius in District 10 (Carrie’s district) is completely Democratic. Times are changing, and Carrie is ready to step up.

Carrie is running against Republican Mark Olson. Mark currently holds two elected positions (a major conflict of interest). He is the incumbent County Legislator for District 10 AND the Mayor of Fayetteville, a village within his district. Yet, despite his alleged leadership in local politics, his area has the highest rate of childhood poverty in the country - 49.6%.

Instead of addressing that issue, Mark voted with the Republican majority to use surplus funds from the American Rescue Plan to build an $85 million aquarium.

The Onondaga County budget is $1.4 billion, and with that budget, the county could address child poverty, uplift educational opportunities, protect local businesses, and promote environmental sustainability. Instead, the legislature has mismanaged its finances and ignored the will of its voters.

Carrie has the credentials to prove she’s more than qualified for the job. Her diverse experience in community building ranges from her background as a teacher in the Syracuse City School District and as a club advisor with Girl Up supporting members who fight for justice. We couldn’t be prouder to stand by her as she pursues this seat.
