The high cost of housing in many areas is a long-standing challenge, and Californians name housing affordability as one of the most important issues facing the state. PPIC researchers have been exploring Californians' views on housing and housing policy and examining trends in residential development.

Desire for Action on Housing Contrasts with How Californians Want to Live

Majorities of Californians favor the state easing environmental and land use restrictions to increase housing supply and support requiring localities to build their fair share of affordable housing. At the same time, an overwhelming majority say they would prefer living in a single-family detached home over living in a condominium or townhome.

Multi-unit Housing Is Becoming More Common, but Has Low Homeownership Rates

Since 2010, almost half of new housing units built in California have been in multi-unit buildings, a larger share than in previous years. Compared with single-family homes, residences in multi-unit housing are more likely to be rentals and tend not to draw families.
