Actions for the week of August 14, 2023
Good morning, activists! Hopefully everyone is staying cool in this heat. We’ve rounded up three actions you can take this week to help fight for a greener, just future!
Action 1
🚫🦴🛢️ Tell Your State Reps: Stop Financing Fossil Fuels
Nearly 30% of fossil fuel stocks are held by pension funds, which holds over $4.5 trillion in assets, and because they’re paid for by public dollars, people like us can pressure politicians to divest these funds away from fossil fuels.
The more we pressure politicians, the more likely we are to get public retirement pensions to stop funding fossil fuels. Several public pension funds are already divesting from fossil fuels, including public pension funds for New York State and Maine, and for cities like Baltimore, New York City, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles.
Add your name to get get pension funds to divest from fossil fuels.
Action 2
☀️🔌⚡️ Join the Movement to Stop Utility Corruption
Sign on to support the Ethics in Energy Act of 2023.
The bill will:
- Prohibit utilities from charging you for things like lobbying expenses, political contributions, legal fees, and advertising
- Make it harder for utilities to increase your rates
- Stop utilities from using your money to lobby against your interests
- Penalize any utility that breaks the rules
Together, we can prevent utility abuses.
Action 3
🌳🏙️🤝 Let’s Green NYC!
The City of New York has recently launched Let’s Green NYC to reach a record number of volunteers by the end of 2024. With an improved tracking and reporting system, Parks can monitor where work is being done and what parts of the city need a little more TLC. Help us grow the number of active volunteers within our city — bring a family member, neighbor, or friend out to any of our events with you!
Visit their volunteer page to learn more about the Let’s Green NYC initiative and to see all the volunteer opportunities and groups across the five boroughs.
