With emerging technologies, consumers face a range of threats–robocalls, scam texts, the misuse of a person’s private information, and, now, the rising use of artificial intelligence (AI). As your Attorney General, I will always stand up for consumers.
As I explain in this op-ed [[link removed]] , the Colorado Privacy Act (CPA), which I pushed for, now provides new protections for consumers. This includes the ability to opt out of having one’s personal data being put up for sale, targeted advertising, and profiling that has a significant impact on a consumer. Consumers also have the right to access and delete personal data that businesses collect on them and to correct data that is inaccurate. That’s a big deal–and we will be working hard to spread the word.
New technologies will bring new challenges to consumers. Take AI, for example. We know that AI can enable scams–through so-called “deep fakes”–and can be misused in a range of ways that could harm consumers. That’s why we filed comments with the Department of Commerce [[link removed]] , calling for a “risk-based” approach–ensuring that businesses don’t use this technology lightly and insisting on transparency in how AI is used.
