MSP Unveils Memorial to Honor Canines Killed in the Line of Duty

Canine Memorial

On Thursday, August 3, the Michigan State Police (MSP) unveiled a permanent memorial dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of our fallen canines. These canines played a pivotal role in creating a safer Michigan, and their contributions to policing and the communities they served will never be forgotten.

The memorial, which was fully funded with donations, is co-located alongside the Fallen Trooper Memorial on the lawn of the MSP Training Academy in Dimondale. Six canines have died in the line of duty since 1998.

New Look to Iconic Bubble

MSP tahoe

In the upcoming weeks, you may notice a different look to our iconic bubble!

We’re excited to introduce a redesigned beacon for our Chevrolet Tahoe PPV fleet with new and innovative technologies that increase visibility for added officer safety.

New features include:

* 360˚ Scene, front takedown, alley and reverse lighting: White lighting around the entire vehicle for additional visibility during incident management, investigations and search and recovery efforts.
* 360˚ Warning Light (Off Angle): Reflectors provide for a full 360˚ coverage of emergency lighting, providing better off angle coverage during traffic stops and clearing intersections.
* Additional visibility: Although the new modernized beacon is 3 inches shorter, the new beacon boosts 144 light-emitting diodes (LED), a 42% increase from the previous model.
* Synchronized Flash Patterns: Designed to increase officer safety during traffic stops, scene investigations, and provide less distraction and more clarity for approaching motorists.
* Lower profile: Allows members to enter facilities with standard garage door openings.

Practice School Bus Safety

With the school year just around the corner, it's time to brush up on school bus safety tips to keep our children safe. The MSP encourages parents to share these essential tips with kids:

* *Pick a Safe Spot:* Choose a safe waiting area away from traffic and streets.
* *Buddy Up:* Always walk to the bus stop with a friend.
* *Stay Calm*: Avoid running or playing while waiting for the bus.
* *Stay Visible:* Never go behind the bus and stay in the driver's view.
* *Wait for the Signal:* Don't board until the bus stops and the driver signals.
* *Cross Safely*: Follow traffic signals and crossing guards.
* *Be Cautious:* Don't talk to strangers, and let parents know if approached.
* *Stay in Sight:* Never enter a stranger's vehicle.

Motorists, need to pay attention too! For drivers, it's crucial to follow the state’s school bus stop laws:

* *Yellow Lights:* Slow down when the bus's yellow lights flash.
* *Red Lights:* Stop at least 20 feet away when red lights flash. Wait for the bus to move and the driver's signal.
* *Hazard Lights:* Be cautious when hazard lights near the bus's headlights flash.
