In Maryland, crab season contributes millions of dollars to the state’s economy. But in recent years, we’ve seen a decline in the blue crab population in the Chesapeake Bay due to numerous factors, including climate change and pollution.

Temperatures are rising, including water temperatures, which can harm the habitat of blue crabs. Additionally, increasing pollution levels in the Chesapeake Bay can lead to more dead zones in the water – areas with low oxygen levels – which also negatively impact blue crabs.
Protecting our state’s environment and natural resources, like the Chesapeake Bay, must always be one of our top priorities.
As Comptroller, I’ve been dedicated to ensuring our agency treats climate change as a serious threat to our state. I’ll continue doing all I can to build a better Maryland for generations to come.
