It took Alexandra Zayas years to realize what she really wanted out of her reporting career. It wasn't only to serve as a witness to and chronicler of history, but specifically to be an investigative journalist.
"I never thought that I was smart enough or mean enough to be an investigative reporter," she said in a recent Poynter Q&A ([link removed]) . But suddenly she was diving into a topic that connected with her. Her Tampa Bay Times investigation "In God's Name" ([link removed]) became a Pulitzer finalist, and Zayas was on the road to becoming one of the nation's most passionate and mindful investigative journalists.
"The entire process showed me that you don’t need to be smarter or meaner; you just need to have curiosity and drive," Zayas said.
Read on for more on getting personalized instruction on your next investigation during Zayas' Poynter course ([link removed]) , one of our most popular and longest-running, and for other opportunities to tap into your curiosity and drive about journalism.
