Mayor Johnson began his career teaching at Jenner Academy in Cabrini-Green and then at Westinghouse College Prep. He later became an organizer with the Chicago Teachers Union, defending schools from privatization and expanding access to state funding.

In 2018, Johnson was elected commissioner of the 1st District of Cook County. He has been a leader in the fights for fully funded public schools, affordable housing, green jobs, and access to mental health care. Mayor Johnson and his wife Stacie live in the Austin community area, where they are raising their three children.
