# [#]John,

Today marks 88 years since President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act of 1935 into law. With this act, our country delivered on the promise that after a lifetime of hard work and paying our fair share of taxes, every American deserves their earned benefits so that we can retire with dignity and economic security.

Right now, 1 in 5 Americans rely solely on Social Security for income – including about 158,000 people in our congressional district who receive these earned benefits.

Americans should never have to worry about getting the earned benefits they paid for during their working years. This critical social safety net ensures that recipients have a roof over their heads and food to eat. Americans who rely on Social Security for basic needs understand that these benefits are already quite low, and that any further reduction would force terrible choices on millions of households, like choosing whether to eat or keep a roof over your head.

Jeopardizing these benefits would be catastrophic. But that’s what some politicians have been trying to do ever since I came to Congress eleven years ago.

Let me be clear: our retirement safety net is a sacred promise to our seniors, and I intend to keep it. That means ensuring that Social Security and Medicare continue to serve as essential financial and health care guarantees for seniors and a vital lifeline for vulnerable members of our community.

John, join me in celebrating the 88-year success story of Social Security, and in rededicating ourselves to protecting and improving the social safety net for our nation’s seniors and the millions of families that depend on these earned benefits.
