Justice Clarence Thomas is making headlines once again.
Shocking new reporting from ProPublica reveals there are “at least 38 destination vacations, including a previously unreported voyage on a yacht around the Bahamas; 26 private jet flights, plus an additional eight by helicopter; a dozen VIP passes to professional and college sporting events; two stays at luxury resorts in Florida and Jamaica; and one standing invitation to an uber-exclusive golf club.” [1] All of these trips were given to Justice Thomas from ultra-wealthy Republican megadonors.
NONE of these trips was documented in annual disclosure reporting.
A judge whose lavish lifestyle turns out to be secretly subsidized by billionaire moguls makes a mockery of our court system. And many of these gifts should have been reported under federal law. That is why People For is renewing our call for the Department of Justice to open an investigation into Thomas’s clear and willful violations of federal ethics laws.
Such obvious attempts to bypass federal ethics requirements and accepted best practices only further erode the confidence many Americans have in the Supreme Court – and is why we must renew our efforts to hold the justices to the highest ethical standards and hold them accountable when they fail to meet them.
