Team,
88 years ago today, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law — landmark legislation that created a federal safety net for retired, elderly, and disabled Americans.
Social Security is one of America’s greatest success stories. It’s allowed folks to retire in dignity and provided a lifeline to the most vulnerable in our communities. Over 1.6 million New Jerseyans depend on Social Security to stay afloat, including over 140,000 in NJ-11
Yet just months ago, extremist Republicans nearly tanked our global economy by demanding massive spending cuts — including to Social Security and Medicare — in exchange for raising the nation’s debt limit. It was one of the most reckless, un-American political stunts I’ve ever seen.
Thankfully, after my Democratic colleagues and I stood up and demanded that House Republicans keep their hands off Social Security, the GOP backed down and we cut a deal to save Social Security and our economy.
But it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of millions of everyday Americans, including countless folks on this grassroots team, who stood up and amplified our message.
Team, to commemorate the anniversary of the Social Security Act, we must recommit to defending this essential program for future generations. Will you add your name alongside mine to demand that Congress protect and preserve this program for the millions of Americans who depend on it?
