It’s My Son’s Last Year Of Elementary School & I’m Not Ready ([link removed])

If I asked you to name the three big transitional moments in school, I bet you’d say entering kindergarten, entering high school, and going off to college. But Meg St-Esprit’s son is about to move on from elementary school, and it turns out that’s a pretty big moment, too.

She writes today about her son and his friends: “It’s clear this building that has held his successes (and tears) for the last six years is chafing around the edges a bit. They aren’t teens, but they aren’t the same kids who entered kindergarten what feels like only moments ago. And I’m not sure either one of us is ready for this transition.” It’s a lovely piece, especially if you’re going through the same thing this year. Check it out.

The One Thing I Do Every Year Before School Starts To Help My Anxious Child ([link removed])

“Weeks before the new school year even begins, parents get bombarded with back-to-school advertising — so much so that it starts to feel like summer is over by mid-July,” writes Amber Guetebier today. “Anxiety over all of the supplies we need and whether or not our kids are going to be OK this year can, quite honestly, be crushing. By the time my son hit third grade, I'd had enough. So, I came up with a plan to try something a little different: a summer trip that backs right up to the start of school.” She lays out why it works for them… and honestly, it sounds great.
