You can't measure the profound emotional, psychological, and spiritual harm of seeing your entire community go up in flames. But there are some losses we can track: 2,700 structures. $5.6 billion in damages. And above all, at least 96 precious lives.

You might be wondering how a lush, tropical island town became a dry tinderbox. It didn't happen naturally.

The town of Lahaina used to be a beautiful wetland. Its aquaculture was a marvel, including the first systems of fish ponds in the world. In fact, this gem was the original capital of the kingdom of Hawaii.

But then colonizers arrived. Sugar barons started stealing water, diverting it into their plantations and disrupting the whole ecosystem. Now add in the global climate crisis, accelerating the extremes, and here we are today with nearly 100 lives lost.

The wildfires that destroyed Lahaina are the direct result of colonization and climate change.

I'm in Congress to uproot the legacy of colonization and win real, long-term, community-based solutions to the climate crisis. But as we fight for a better future, we also have to help each other out right here and right now. Join our movement in supporting Maui today.
